The Smoothie Bowl Shack

The Smoothie Bowl Shack….

The Smoothie Bowl Shack is a small business that I started at the age of 17, during my last year of high school. My interest in nutrition was very new at this time. I was (and still am) always looking for fresh, colourful, healthy food options when I’m out and about!

My sister and I were at Glebe markets op shopping one weekend and, as per usual, I was hungry . Whilst lurking around the food stall section I realised there was nothing really ‘healthy’ on offer. It was a nice sunny day and I remember saying something to my sister like “ah wouldn’t a smoothie bowl go down so well right now?”..light bulb moment! I stopped myself and then thought..why don’t I do it myself!?

I started with one small ‘mix and go’ machine, which could only make one bowl at a time, but still managed to pump out a fair few.. it was a hit!

This became my new project. I wasn’t enjoying Year 12, so instead of waiting for time to go by during class I decided to sit at the back with my laptop and write up a plan, create a menu and eventually pitched the idea to the organisers of the markets. This gave me a sense of purpose as I always felt there was nothing that really interested me in school, I was so into health food and this project seemed like just what I needed to get my mojo back.

It took some time until we were allowed to do a “trial” run for a week. Looking back on that first week makes me laugh so much! I started out with a single  ‘mix and go’ blender machine, which could only make one bowl at a time (you can image in the struggles) but I still managed to pump out a fair few.. it was a hit woop woop!

After a few weeks Glebe Markets gave the ‘Shack’ a permanent spot and with the amazing help of my family, we developed it into a business and implemented a more efficient and as my dad would say, “systemised” structure.

That summer we did three other markets with our now 4 ‘big boy’ machines haha (no more one at a time). We also opened up a pop-up store in Bondi Junction throughout the winter and sold our bowls at ‘Splendour in the Grass ‘up in Byron Bay.

The past year has been crazy for the Smoothie Bowl Shack. We have learnt from mistakes and grown so much in such a short space of time.

I want my story to show young people that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. People will always throw a “you can’t” at you, especially as a young person. Do not listen!! I mean a 17 year old having her own fully functioning business? “nah you cant do that” .. watch me! School always made me feel as though I was going to be a bum because I couldn’t concentrate and understand a lot of the things. It wasn’t because I “didn’t care” or “wasn’t trying” I just genially couldn’t absorb it! But when I found something I actually really loved I blossomed and showed myself I can actually do something with my life.

As young people it is time to think outside the box. Don’t just do certain things because you think “thats the way it is”. Look at things for yourself and take big leaps of faith. Most of the time they work out and even if they don’t you learn more than any text book will teach you.

LOTS of things to come from the Smoothie Bowl Shack ! ! If you are ever in GLEBE on a Saturday remember to pop by and grab yourself one of our famous smoothie bowls.

Stay tuned. x @thesmoothiebowlshack

Hey Kath! Love the Smoothie Bowl Shack Post. I’m taking a break from college after finishing my Associates and would love to open up a similar healthy pop up in my area. How did you get the funds to buy what you needed to start? I’m currently working as a guitar teacher and for a vegan magazine, but I could get a second job to save to start one up. Any suggestions? 🙂

Hi Kath, I love love love how you were able to develop a business with smoothies, I’ve been wanting to sell fresh smoothies at my local market but haven’t been able to find good resources to guide me in the right direction. The hardest part is writing up a business plan, do you have any tips on how to write one?
