U.S.A x Free Radical Tv
In November of 2015, the Free Radical crew was formed. Who? What? When? Where? How? My talented friend Yasmin who is the founder of Culture Machine had a light bulb moment – we had been working on a string of creative projects but had never actively documented the relationships, personalities and general frivolity that goes on behind the scenes.
Yas pitched a Culture Machine road trip, and Luka jumped on board to film. Free Rad was created as a web series off-shoot to Culture Machine Agency. The boys on the camera and Yasmin creative directing and steering the fashion shoots. So where do I come into all of this?
Everyone is a stranger before you get to know them and what better way to do so than a spontaneous trip across the globe!
I was already working as a model for Culture Machine in Sydney. Yas and I had never met as she was living and running Culture Machine in Bali, but when the offer came up to venture with them to Los Angeles – I couldn’t resist. I know what you’re thinking.. but they were complete strangers! Everyone is a stranger before you get to know them and what better way to do so than a spontaneous trip across the globe!
There was Yasmin, Kale, Luka and Jake. I instantly clicked with everyone on different levels. It was a strange thing to feel immediately myself with a group of people I had never met before, all the way on the other side of the globe. Strange but magical. I could easily say that those 10 days were some of the best days of my life so far. I made some intense connections, have memories I will hold forever and friendships for a life time!
I was stoked when the whole crew (except the beautiful Jakey) decided to move over to Sydney! This is when I met Yasmin’s brother Kai. Funny rocky start to our friendship (with a disagreement over eating carbs!) but now we are the best of buds. It’s been cool seeing him come into his own (@urmumsyadad). Making memes was his true calling and he’s killing it haha!
Claudia is our behind the scenes wizz. She first applied to intern for Culture Machine but has now become a huge part of all of our lives and is an integral part of the family. The first time I met Claudia was in the first few weeks of everyone moving to Sydney. We were on a ‘Epokhe’ shoot and she came along to assist Yasmin with photography. One of my first memories of Claudia was of her talking about a show called “ Sex Sent me to the ER “ whilst making funny observations in the Uber on the way home – I knew she was a keeper. She is now one of my closest friends and greatest human I know. She will go above and beyond for the people in her life. She is like my surrogate mother and I do not know what I would do without her.
It’s a cool/crazy/beautiful family we’ve got going on! And that’s it – we really are like family. Yeah at times we get annoyed at each other, maybe even become distant for a moment. But at the end of the day we always end up back together supporting each other and doing what we love.
